Blog back up! And, an iFlash on iPhone update…

Loopware — Tags: , — Davey @ August 22, 2008

Hey everyone,

So I’ve converted back to WordPress for my blog. I liked Chyrp, but upgrading it was too much of a hassle to keep using it. Unfortunately, during the conversion process all existing comments were lost, but feel free to leave new ones!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted about iFlash on the iPhone, and unfortunately I don’t have much to report. I’ve been busy doing an internship at Apple for the last 3 months, which has put a damper on my plans to have a working version out soon. I’m hoping to find some time to work on it soon though, and I’ll try to blog about it more regularly once there’s more to see.

If anyone’s interested in seeing the mockups, I could probably find a way to get those posted as well.

Thanks!

- Davey

  12. Please send out an email to all who have purchased iFlash when you have submitted the iPhone version to the App Store.

I know of plenty here in Hong Kong that are waiting eagerly for it!

  14. Please find that time. Being able to export to an itouch/iphone would be absolutely incredible. I dislike the other itouch/iphone flash card apps out there.

If you build it, money will come……

    :(

  15. I agree with everything said! I would love to see mockups, and am desperate to get iFlash on the iPhone; iFlash has been so much help in my Japanese studies, but as the course gets harder, I need to study more, and iFlash on the iPhone would be just perfect!!

  16. Mockups would be lovely! An iFlash port for iPhone would be brilliant, especially with a synch feature! My Attic Greek grades will thank you!

  17. looking forward to an iphone version. Local storage of decks is key for me (and most touch users).

    thanks

  18. Yes to everything above. iFlash is a pleasure to use. It has all the hallmarks of a good Mac program. Many of the new iPhone apps don’t seem to embody Mac elegance.

  19. Lookup ” iflipr “, great app to use in the meantime. Stay away from “Falsh my brain”… it is a piece of crud!

    Comment by 老外 — September 3, 2008 @ 8:02 am
  20. I agree, flash my brain is garbage. I don’t own a mac, only an ipod flash, so have never tried iFlash, can’t wait to though.. Please make the dream a reality :P

  21. i bought iflipr too, it’s a great app. the developer is very active also. too bad we haven’t seen much from iflash.

  22. I would definitely buy a functional copy of iFlash for iPhone, especially if it sync’d with iFlash on my Mac. I never get around to making the flashcards I always say I’m going to make, because by the time I get home I’ve forgotten what it was I wanted to remember… (Hence the need for flashcards.) If I could do it on the go, it would rock. Now, if you could also make it work with Jott, and I could Jott a flashcard on the go, then you’d get my vote for Product of the Decade…

  23. I smell vapourware!

…. and where are these mockups you were talking about?!

    Comment by nonamebrand — September 6, 2008 @ 8:49 am
  24. Yes!
    iFlash for iPhone will rock!
I know you’re busy, Davey, but we’re all behind you when you’ve got time to work on it, and O, with my wallet when its done.

  25. The students at our school all think that having iFlash on the iPhone and Touch would be awesome. Almost all our language classes use iFlash, and we’re eager to have you do this. If you want anything tested, please let us know!

    Comment by Margo — September 10, 2008 @ 9:24 am
  26. Yes, iFlash for iphone/ipod touch is much needed. There are flash card products on that market already, and I’d hate to start off with one of them. iFlash is a terrific application — I’d gladly pay for the portable application.

I would make a suggestion, though: would it be easier to start off with a application that simply tests cards made on the Desktop side? If this makes a release any speedier, I’m for it. [And for me, I would only create cards on the Desktop anyway].

  27. I have nothing new to add. I just wanted to comment to give you the indication that we all love iFlash and cannot wait to start using it on our iphones and ipod touches!!! The sooner the better, but we all understand busy schedules!

  28. “My Study Cards” is a pretty good program with an extremely responsive developer. However, it doesn’t have some major things like the ability to put images on cards. I would certainly look at iFlash if it ever comes out - transferring cards from one program to another isn’t very hard to do - but I’m pretty happy with “My Study Cards,” which seems to be developing quickly.

    Comment by Tim — September 11, 2008 @ 8:10 pm
  29. Please! I just checked out nearly all flash card programs for the iphone/touch and they all have major functional issues or lack features (like basic tagging or intelligent quizzing). An iFlash companion would do serious damage in the category. Please don’t make us wait too long.

    Comment by Zvi — September 12, 2008 @ 8:09 am
  30. I think this is turning into vaporware, with the developers mention of his work at apple, the failure to realise the mockups offered despite numerous requests, and the slow updates to the blog, I’d recommend people start looking elsewhere for a useful flashcard app.

    Comment by Sean — September 12, 2008 @ 11:13 pm
  31. I also think iFlash on the iPhone is also vaporware. Still no mockups or even an explanation of how it might work.

iFlipr and Anki are both good alternatives to iFlash and both developers are very active. iFlipr is the best native flashcard app for the iPhone at the moment. Anki has a much better spaced repetition implemetation than iFlash. An iPhone client is still being developed, but you can use it through its web app if you have an iPhone or Wifi access. Anki is also free.

  32. So looking forward to this app. If you have the time, I’d love to see the mockups.
    Keep up the great work!

  33. please developer, just know us whether you’re working iFlash for iPhone/iPod touch. If you are working it, we’ll wait it forever!!!

    Comment by lisa — September 14, 2008 @ 4:41 pm
  34. I will concur with others who’ve begged you to find that time to convert iFlash to an app for the iPhone! I lug my computer to and from university in order to take my iFlash with me, but long for the day I will only need my phone to drill on my flash cards!!!

Thanks for your hard work. This is a great program that I often recommend to other students and having the iPhone application will make it even more enticing!

  35. iFlash makes learning so much easier and I’d LOVE to have it on my iPhone.

  36. Davey, your public is getting restless! Soon there will be posts on how to use our iFlash card decks on an inferior application. We realize your personal time constraints impede development but there are throngs of people who view this blog and never say a word. Demand is very high but we need more than what has been promised and said. No one is expecting perfection on the first release, that’s what updates are for anyhow. As we have all read from older post, there are other app developers willing to try and de-throne you; unfortunately they will, and we will all have to settle for less, unless of course iFlash for the iPhone/Touch becomes a reality promptly.
In my own little remote corner of the world there are nearly a hundred people waiting for this application anxiously. I’m sure your pride as a developer keeps you from releasing a mediocer product but everything beyond the iFlash 2.7 format can be added/updated after the core release.
The benefits of an iPhone (ie. creating cards) would be nice but I think I speak for most of us by saying that we would at least like to use our iFlash decks with our iPhones now just like we could on older iPods, and we will patiently wait for the expected improvements to come in the near future.

    Sincerely,
    “Holding My Breath”

  37. Getting iFlash to work with an iPod Touch or iPhone would be the single best development for this device outside of iTunes.

I’m looking for a way to get the benefit of old school flash cards to practice new business Chinese terms when I’m on the road, but see myself applying this to other languages and to practicing memorizing key points for banking deals I’m working on.
