First look at iFlash touch
This is long overdue, but here’s a first look of iFlash touch running on an iPhone. Please don’t take this as an indicator that it will be released soon, because it is still far from complete, but do know that I’m actively working on it! :-)
Anyways, enough talk. Here it is!

Nothing too exciting yet, but it’s a good start (especially considering how my original sketch for this screen looked). You’ll notice that the Deck Library is going to be built right into iFlash touch, so anyone, whether they have iFlash on the Mac or not, will instantly get access to over 2,500 decks. Pretty awesome!
I’ll be revealing more screenshots as development continues, so stay tuned!

Also, note that none of the icons are final. I’m still looking for a talented icon designer (if you are one, please email me!).
Woo hoo! Great start!
I’ll keep checking back. I use iFlash on my macbook, but the iphone is becoming so much more functional, I’m carrying the macbook less and less.
Good luck on your internship.
Howdy Davey-
Love seeing the progress on the app! If you still need icon work, send me an email and I’ll be happy to help. I couldn’t find an email address other than your iFlash support one.
I am a UI designer here in Portland so we can meet up in person if you want.
- buck.
Buck: I’ll be in touch! :-)
Keep up the good work! I use iFlash to study Chinese vocabulary and can’t wait for an iPhone version so that I can study when away from my Mac.
Yay! Looking forward to the release! Thanks for the sneak peek.
More! Faster! Keep at it!
Desperately waiting for the app
iFlash on any Mac is great.
iFlash on the iPhone however would boost its use dramatically, since I not want to carry a portable mac with me all the time.
I don’t have a mac, I’ve got a pc and an ipod touch. But I’ve heard about how awesome this program is and am eagerly awaiting it’s release for iphone/ipod… Can anyone tell me what format I need to start getting my lists into to convert them for use with this? Cheers.
iFlash is the most amazing program. I tell EVERYONE about it. I have tried to convince people that it is a reason to buy a mac. Thank you!!
I know you’re working hard to finish the iphone version, but I have no idea if it takes two months or two years to make. Do you have a rough timeline?
~Jessica
I too would like to have a general idea of when this will be available for the iPhone. Can you let us in on what you are thinking? If it is still months and months away, I might want to consider exporting/converting/using my cards with a different flashcard program for iPhone (none of which are much good right now). That would be a painful move for me as I absolutely love using iFlash.
To Sean: Simple .txt-files (e.g. tab delimited) will do. If you need non-Roman characters, make sure you save your files in UTF-16.
David: Please, please, please – invest all the time you have and finish up a first release of iflash touch asap. The iflash community can’t wait any more. We do need this piece of software just as you’ll need a loyal customer base.
Cheers
Alex
One request:
would there be any way to make Arabic flashcards work correctly on the iphone? the iphone displays arabic text as de-linked letters. if this is possible, it would be wonderful.
thanks.
Looks great! Once you get to the point for testing, I’d be happy to alpha or beta test for you! i’m sure others would be interested too.
Ben: Unfortunately, it will probably be at least a few months before it goes GM. I’m going to have to recommend that you try out some of the other flash card apps for the iPhone.
Alex: Yup, I am :-). I am currently grappling with the features that I want to be in version 1.0. If I add too few, it will result in bad App Store reviews (those people are harsh!), so I have to carefully weigh what’s going in.
Looks great Davey. Keep it up!
All this time and all you were able to build is a friggin list!?!? I know hardly anything about objective-c and I can build this in the SDK interface builder in no time, or mock it up in photoshop in 10mins.
Also, this is probably the least important screen. Why not show us the actulal card interface.. the interface we will be spending most of our time looking at, or was that to difficult to sketch out in wiggly lines?
Vapourware. No doubt about it.
@not likely:
If you really think it’s vaporware, then why are you still following this blog? There’s honestly no need for your negativism here.
@not likely
Yeah, dude.
Lay off him. We don’t all have infinite time and skills, so feel free to post a link to the iPhone apps you’ve created, we’d all be happy to give you some creative criticism. I’d love to learn to code and write this app myself too, but I’m in school, so all I can do is appreciate the work Davey’s doing, and be patient.
Don’t bust the chops of one guy who’s trying to meet the needs of many. Not cool.
Looks Good Davey,
I didn’t know about this blog until today, but I’ll actively monitor it for any new news on iPhone iFlash! The GREs and other exams are coming up for me so I’m looking forward to great things!
I too tell my friends about iFlash for the Mac. My PC friends are jealous… but Meh…. what are you doing to do! :)
Aaron:
I’m learning Arabic atm, which is why I want this app.. I don’t think it’s within Davey’s framework to add keyboard support to the ipod touch/iphone… if you have a jailbroken iphone/ipod you can use the http://www.iphoneislam.com program that adds an arabic keyboard, it works perfectly but costs $30. otherwise, sooner or later apple will add arabic support.
Good Luck.
great news! like so many others, i’m very much looking forward to release day and will gladly pay for the application.
Just a thought… I have 9000 note cards with pictures embedded that I would like to use to study while I am on the wards in the hospital. Anychance, you can make an export utility for iFlash, so I can use mentalcase for the iphone while I am waiting for your version for the iPhone. or Perhaps you can convert to an open format, so I can get those embedded pics?
I am looking forward to getting your application for my phone ASAP;)
Thanks!
Ben: Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be able to do that :-(.
Everyone: Thanks for the encouragement and kind words! Right now I’m working on the networking code (icky, icky stuff) that’ll get your decks from iFlash on the Mac into your iPhone. I’m hoping to have it be a one-click process, but we’ll see :-).
woohoo! This app rocks! I use iFlash on my mac all the time and it works perfectly! I hope the iPhone version will be released soon. )))
Wouldn’t it be nice if we shake our iPhone, the next flash card pop up just as the function the new brand ipod nano chromatic has?
Oh, I have a bit of a work around for using iFLASH on the iphone. I downloaded Jaadu VNC client and I connect to my MAC to it and I then use iFlash from work on my iphone. Not ideal, but at least it is portable!
Thanks Davey for at least considering the export… I recognize it is not the best of business moves…lol
Keep away from using the accelerometer for any functions (or make it optional). I tried another flash card app in the Appstore tha did this, whenever the bus or train shook, all my flash cards would “flash” before my eyes. Very annoying!
Looking good. Can’t wait for this to be available. Tried iFlipr and it really sucks! What I would suggest, is try and come up with a baseline of functionality for first release (especially since updates are free on the app store usually). Yes, it means leaving some functionality out, but getting something to market sooner will help us give you better feedback on how to improve it. I know it’s difficult, because you want to produce something great, but there is no comparison to getting something in the hands of users. Be aware that Apple no longer allow people to review an app unless they’ve bought it, so you shouldn’t have too many worries about inappropriate comments. And of course, if you need a tester, I’d be happy to help (been a developer for 10+ years, and know how to break things :-)
The other thing I’ve noticed, having done some development work with Microsoft Surface, is that with touch-based apps, the UI is really important. Get it wrong, and the whole “natural” feel is lost. So getting the interaction between user and flash card is probably your most important area of concern.
Anyway, enough babble from me – keep up the good work, and hope to be buying this soon! Steve
Count me in as a happy tester for a hopefully soonish aplha or beta. :) Can’t wait. I just luuuuuuuuuuuuv iFlash.
Greets Tim
Ps.: Found a bug in my last post. :) aplha > alpha
Having now surveyed the field of possible competitors, I’ve decided to wait on iFlash Touch, but here to wish to emphasize that sooner is better than later.
Those other guys are ladling up your market share with what looks like (after coming their forums) seems like it would be an inferior product! Of course, there’s only a screenshot to compare them to, but if your product is as flashy as the desktop version then….
I bought a Mac just to have this program. Yet there is no program so I guess that was my bad.
iFlash is the best study aid I have found and is an amazing value. For the iFlash touch version, I would love to be able to somehow pan and zoom in on my various images that I have attached to my cards. This is the main factor for determining how useful the touch version is for me since my attached images are very important. If I can’t see them well on the small screen, at least the ability to zoom/pan would help… I don’t know how technically difficult this would be to implement though.
I am a grad nursing student and fell in love with your application. I cannot wait for your version on iTouch! Thanks so much for posting your mock-ups – I’m getting giddy just looking at them! Keep up the awesome work!
Oh and yes – if you need a tester for any beta versions – count me in as well!
C’mon—hurry! The world needs iFlash for the iPhone and Touch. Don’t let the competition build on their headstart. Let me know if you need beta testers or if we can help in any other way.
–and good luck.
PS: Even if an iPhone can’t create card decks containing non-Western content (like Hebrew and Arabic), an iPhone will be able to play such card decks imported from one’s Mac, right?
will using iFlash require the desktop app as well?
well i have iflash on mac osx and ive payed the 14 dollars allready will there be a discount for those who have payed already and u have no compotition all of the other flash card apps arent very good. and a price quote would be great thanks
Oh yah and i can test the app for you quitsa at yahoo.com is my email and thanks again
Looks promising!
We would love iFlash on our iPodTouch’s- Studying Hungarian – closing in on 3,000 cards with 50 categories! Need sub-categories too! Also working on German.
Keep up the good work!
Rodger
I am recommending some efficiency recoding of the iFlash database. At 7000 cards + photos, things get a little slow.
File size is about 250 megs.
Is that my ‘Japanese Food’ deck?
I searched the Deck Library and there was just mine, and an exact copy of mine (what’s up with that?)
I have commented before, but let me beat the drum here – I want to take iFlash on the road and to me that means the iPhone. !!! I am hoping the function for the audio, local downloading of the data files, etc. will be there, along with multiple sides. Happy to be a beta and/or alpha tester! Good luck…
