iFlash Touch: Studying Your Cards!

Loopware — Tags: — Davey @ April 25, 2009

As part of iFlash Touch being submitted to the App Store, I am going to be posting details about the app all throughout the week. This is the last in the series of how iFlash will work on your iPhone. Read “Exporting Decks” and “Viewing your cards” for more iFlash Touch info!

I spent a while figuring out how studying should work on the iPhone, and I think I’ve come up with a good compromise between simplicity and features. Here are the settings for studying:

There’s not much there, but that’s on purpose :). I tried to keep iFlash Touch as streamlined as possible, which carries into the design of the study view…

Basically, the entire screen is devoted to your cards. Flicking left and right changes cards, while up and down switches card sides. Pinching changes the text size of the current card side. And, tapping the bottom of the screen will go to the next side/card, if you don’t want to flick :).

Once you’re gone through all the cards, you’ll see this screen:

… and that’s it! Now, you’ve pretty much seen all of what iFlash Touch has to offer. There are a few little tidbits, but I’ll leave those to be discovered :). I hope you’ve enjoyed these previews!

- Davey

P.S. And yes, landscape mode works while studying!

  1. This looks fantastic. I keep checking the AppStore hoping I’ll see it pop up. I have to admit at first I was frustrated with the time it took to get this developed, but having seen the screen shots I’m REALLY glad I was patient and waited. This is going to be fantastic! Thanks for your great efforts on this!

  3. Looks great! Love the simplicity. … Is it going to show attached photos and play audio?

  4. Someone get Steve Jobs and Tim Cook on the line and tell them to fast track this app to the live store!

Must like Stan, I check daily and hope to see it on there. Every time I don’t see it I raise a fist in the air and shout, “CURSE YOU CUPERTINO!” :)

This’ll help sooo much in my studying of Japanese.

  5. Lee: Not in version 1.0. It is a top priority feature for the next bigger release of iFlash Touch (1.1). :)

  6. Thanks for the info, Davey. Now I’m not only looking forward to the release of version 1.0, but also 1.1. Great work and good to know you have plans to keep developing it.

  7. Can you still do score and interval study modes?

  8. Nice to see the clean design! Problem now is that time does not seem to pass fast enough ’til the app is approved!

A wish for an upcoming update: it would be nice to see how it looks with more than two sides on the cards.

    Again, good work!

  9. I hope you change the color of the sides. Looking at that gray will get pretty boring over time. I love changing side colors in the mac version. It makes a somewhat boring task more bright.

  10. Well, the lack of audio makes 1.0 a bit handcuffed for me. Studying tonal languages, I’ve found the audio aspect of IFlash to be the most valuable, whether single words, sentences or short passages. And in teaching young children English, have found the images equally valuable. I just assumed given the audio characteristics of the iPhone/iPod touch that version 1.0 would have it. Oh well, can’t please all the people… and you did as many asked, got out the basics. Regardless, looks like a solid foundation for moving foreword, can’t wait to play with it. Any idea how much of a break you’ll be taking before 1.1 may get some love?

  11. Will there be a search function? I use the cards as my own medical database in addition to studying. I look forward to using the program!

  12. Your method of switching between cards and card sides is exactly how I imagined it. This is awesome, I especially like that you can use it in landscape mode or portrait mode easily.

  13. Will the score of the cards be synced back to the iFlash app?

  14. Looking forward to it. What about study modes, especially interval and score, … having them on the iphone or the touch and SYNCING them back to the Mac would be key. I imagine most users use these study modes … could you reply.

    Thx

  15. Adam: 1.0 will only support simple memorization, but it will also support syncing back which cards were memorized to the Mac version. Score and interval studying will come in a future update :).

  16. Can’t wait to use it. Simplicity is the key for learning overall! Thank you so much for your effort and don’t make this a 1 million feature toy – keep it straight and effective like iFalsh itself. Thanks!!!

  17. Can’t wait to get my hands on v1.0! Unfortunately I also can’t wait to get my hands on v1.1. Studying birds, flowers, butterflies, etc. is really hard without being able to see the attached pictures. Keep up the good work Davey!

  18. I can probably wait to find out… or maybe you mentioned it already, but will there be a “Deck Library” where we can download and share our decks with others?

    Thanks again… and can’t wait.
