iFlash Touch: Another Submission Update

Loopware — Tags: — Davey @ April 29, 2009

iFlash Touch is still waiting for approval by Apple. I’ve been contacted once by them with a problem, and sent an email clarifying the solution (they weren’t using the right version of iFlash for the Mac), but I still haven’t heard back from them (that was 3 days ago).

I’ll update again once I get some good news :-).

  1. Thanks for the update.

Come on Apple. Let it go live already. I keep checking this website, the App Store on iTunes and throughout the work day on my iPhone. I want this thing! It’ll help with my learning of the Japanese language.

  2. This is ridiculous, I know the App store is popular and there’s a lot of apps that they need to approve, but >2 weeks for approval is absolutely terrible. They need to hire more staff or something.

  3. Apple are really struggling to keep up – all sorts of delays and screw-ups are being reported across the board. Nevertheless, I’m checking every day, can’t wait for the end result.

  4. I am also checking every day. The potential of an iPod touch client is part of the reason I went with this program.

(there were other reasons, such as: the ease of using the librarys’, the ability to have more than two “sides” to each card, and others)

I want this in time for me to study for my Chinese final.

  5. How does a baby shaker app get approved and iFlash Touch take more than 10 days to get approved? Seriously.

  6. Can’t wait !
I can’t believe there are so many useless crappy applications on the App store and they are taking forever to approve the one that may be useful to tons of people !

  7. I check your blog every now and then to see how the iPod touch client is doing. I gather we are very close now! Great!

  8. Hey Davey, I’m a big fan of iflash and I’m glad the basics of the touch version are getting out there. This applies more or less for iflash, but do you plan on implementing the Leitner algorithm in the future? Of course it is doable by stacking cards in multiple categories and applying the scoring system, but it’ll be really nice if I didn’t have to do that.

  9. I LOVE this program has gotten me 100% on so many tests in college, if they make an app for my itouch my life would be so much easier!!! What can we do as users to get this approved faster?

  10. Since you’re not charging anything for it anyway, why not release it as a jailbreak-installable app (with Cydia or whatever)? I presume that’s how you’ve been managing the beta, so it shouldn’t be too hard.

  12. I can’t believe they were stupid enough to reject it ! what now ?

    Comment by Kate — May 2, 2009 @ 10:41 am
  13. Now that is has been rejected, the problem will have to be located, fixed and re-submitted and probably have to wait another 3-4 weeks for approval… Apple is really testing my patience lately

  14. Disappointed. Hope that there is a legitimate reason and that it can be sorted out quickly. Sigh. I feel your frustration, Davey.

  15. This is what I hate, hundreds of shitty apps get approval at the drop of a hat and just create more crap that you need to wade through to find anything good, but something like iFlash? Let’s wait 2 weeks and then finally reject the app without giving a solid reason!

    Comment by Tres — May 2, 2009 @ 11:04 pm
  16. Actually you don’t know how fast those crap-apps are reviewed. I guess it’s about the same. The problem is I guess that with higher complexity you screw up faster and it seems that e.g. Apple used the wrong version of iFlash which won’t sync and therefore the app can’t be tested. I read in one forum that an app got rejected because the desktop-app with the sync-ability wasn’t released yet. But it seems that this isn’t the case for iFlash.
It’s a blackbox and I guess w/ the growth of the Appstore they are understaffed as well and can’t get enough new staff in time. Don’t want to defend Apple here but a simple rant like “those shitty apps get approved and this won’t” isn’t justified. The whole review-process per se seems to be flawed (if you read what you can get in the net about it).

And the jailbreak-solution — I think that Davey would need to add a new compile-chain for that because the standard-XCode-way will only compile for the “official” way. But I’m not sure about that.

  18. Thanks for the update davey. I cannot imagine how this could happen. I’ve checked out Mental Case an if they got approval. . . I don’t see why iFlash can’t. Is there politics in software development I should know about, maybe the app store wants you to charge money. . .

  19. Looking forward! Audio playback feature is a must!

  20. I agree with Jc–charge at least 99 cents and I bet Apple will bump this app to another priority. I doubt they want to host/share/monitor this stuff as readily as other apps if they’re not making a dime off it.

I would pay for this app, no matter what the cost! Davey–do yourself a favor and make some $$ on this puppy!

    Comment by bpbatch — May 4, 2009 @ 12:05 pm
  21. Actually the idea of letting it cost 99 Cent isn’t that bad because it has one big advantage:
People won’t download it, just because it’s free and then leave a 1-star-review w/ a “this app is crap because you need a $15-desktop app that you can use it”. I heard that this is the main reason why Keynote Remote costs 99 Cent – just because of the “fear” that people who do not have Keynote download it because it’s free and then give it a bad review.
99 Cent doesn’t hurt the people who use iFlash (even a school kid can afford that and because it’s for learning I bet parents can be convinced to pay the buck) but people who do not use it yet, won’t download the app just because it’s free. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people can’t read the app store-texts which say that some additional software is required.

  22. We’re not alone in our opinion that the approval process needs refinement.

Trent Reznor has recently voiced his dismay:

    http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/04/trent-reznor-rips-apple-summarizes-current-smartphone-oses/#continued

“Everyone – let me be clear. I love Apple products and as goofy and out-of-touch as their app approval process / policy is, I will still use them because they work 1000X better than the competition. This is not a debate, it’s a fact. The iPhone is THE most elegant, modern smartphone at this point in time and it’s perfect for what we want to do with the NIN app – except for the ludicrous approval process, and that’s what I want to draw attention to.”
