iFlash Touch is now available!

Loopware — Tags: — Davey @ May 15, 2009

iFlash Touch is now available from the App Store, so go ahead and download it now! Or, learn more about it from the new iFlash Touch site.

Along with the iFlash Touch release, there’s also a new version of iFlash available for the Mac (2.8). The biggest change that 2.8 brings is, naturally, support for exporting to the iPhone. It also fixes some key bugs that have been affecting many users (like card decks ballooning in size with images). If you already have iFlash, it’ll tell you about the update next time you launch it.

Please, enjoy iFlash Touch 1.0 and iFlash 2.8. They’ve been cooking in the oven for a long time, and I hope the overall result is worth it!

  8. Thanks for all your hard work. This is awesome. I’m studying for Boards for medical school and this makes taking my material everywhere much easier.

I’d like to see all of the memorization options in the next release instead of just simple memorization…with the ability to sync my scores back to the desktop version. I’d also like to see searching. Some of my decks are fairly large and I sometimes want to find a particular card…scrolling isn’t really an option. The ability to categorize in the iPhone.

If it stays as is it’s a great app. Adding more features will just make it that much better.

  12. Thanks very much for all your hard work! Downloaded iFlash Touch about an hour ago, and have already studied 2 lessons of my Japanese study!!

I agree with Brett, that a future version providing more than just simple memorisation type study would be a big win for me. I typically used the desktop version with the Scoring type of study, limiting myself to cards with a score < 4.

Another feature of the desktop app I used was to only study a fixed number of cards at a time (20, or 50), since some of my lessons could have more than that (especially near exam time). That would be nice too.

But these aren’t must haves – I have iFlash on the iPhone now, and that has been my biggest requirement for ages! Awesome application, and works so well. It is so easy to study with. Thanks again!

  13. I’ve been using iFlash Touch since yesterday and I’m still impressed by it, great work mate :)

    As for 1.01 and 1.1?

You need to add the ability to uncheck all cards in a category on the device itself. At the moment if I want to study all the cards in a category (and I haven’t “unmemorized” them in iFlash OS X beforehand) I have to go to “Study all” which doesn’t untick them and then as I go through them I have to untick the ones I don’t know.

A general overall improvement for both iFlash and iFlash touch would be the ability to shuffle only by certain card sides. For example, I only want to shuffle the Kanji and English meaning card sides, not the “kana” card side.

In iFlash Touch it’d also be really nice if you could see how many cards are left when you’re studying them. It feels a bit endless at the moment.

Other than that, as someone else said, some different card colours would be nice, but that’s not a biggy. It’d be nice to be able to create your own decks and add cards to existing decks on the go too. Maybe make it so that feature only appears once you sync for the first time with a registered version of iFlash OS X?

Question for those studying Japanese and Chinese. I am currently studying at Beijing University and would like to know if the Chinese characters used in Japanese have the same meaning of their Chinese counterparts. For example: 京 in Chinese means capital, does it also mean capital when used in Japanese?

Comment by just want to know — May 15, 2009 @ 5:00 am
  16. To the poster above

A lot of the Kanji do have the same meaning as the Hanzi, but the sounds are almost always completely different.

Also keep in mind that China uses simplified characters, whereas Japan still uses the old style (along with Taiwan I think?).

In your example of 京 it does mean capital in Japanese but it has the pronunciations kyou, miyako, kin and kei.

  17. Congratulations and great job! Phew!

    For next versions:
    (1) sound
    (2) right-to-left languages (if possible)
The ability to make or modify decks on the go might be helpful, but is definitely not a biggie for me.

  18. Davey,

I posted in the other thread about a “bug” with going back and forth between the different sides of a card; however, the problem was just me not knowing that iFlash Touch supported gestures (very nice!). Thanks to the demo movie you posted, I can easily flip between the different card sides now.

    Great job!

    谢谢.

  19. WOOOOHOOO!! Thanks Davey!!!
This is going to be VERY USEFUL!!!!
I’ve only played around with it for a few moments, but love it already.

    As for 1.01 and 1.1:
    - I’ve attached images to my original cards on my Mac’s iFlash, but they didn’t seem to transfer. Is that possible in a future version if iFlash for the iPhone?
    - I’ve also customized the background colors on my cards on my original cards, but they also don’t seem to transfer.

Davey, this is truly fantastic!!! Thank you for all your hard work. Back in the day (about a year or so ago) when I was choosing a flash card program there were about 3 or 4 applications for the Mac I was looking at. I’m even more glad today that I chose iFlash!!!

    Comment by Bryan — May 15, 2009 @ 8:17 am
  20. Although it didn’t come in time for my finals (ended a few days ago), I am still thrilled that it has finally come. I love the Mac version and can wait for some of the more advanced featured to be added but as it stands it works just fine and definitely light years better than the other programs out there.

My only suggestion is that you should add a settings feature that allows for the user to determine which corner of the screen the memorization (and i would assume, eventually, the flag) button be placed. I’ve realize that i use my right hand to swipe the cards, which forces me to have to “reach” across the screen to the bottom left to press the memorization button. if you allowed users to “place” the button in either corner, i think it would be great. I would love to be able to place it in the upper right.

other than that, congrats. you have the foundation down, which was the hardest part both programming-wise and paperwork-wise, now the only way is up!

BTW, i couldn’t help but feel as though the whole approval process was akin to waiting to hear back from college admissions office regarding being accepted or not and not getting any info from them.

  21. It’s a good application.

Would it be possible to allow font size adjustment and/or scrolling sides? Some of my text is rather lengthy and goes off of the card.

    Thanks for the hard work.

  23. Well done! You nailed the basics. Looks like a strong foundation to build from. No bugs on my end. You and your beta testing team did a great job. Thanks so much. As others have said, some color is a must, and I very much look forward to/need the audio. Wonder how long it will be before the first Windows user asks where the XP/Vista/7 version is?

  24. Congratulations on creating a great app and getting it approved. I can’t imagine how stressful the last couple of weeks must have been for you.

I was very suprised that you decided to make it free. I’m sure you’ll see a jump in the number of registered users of iFlash for Mac and hope this justifies the time you have put into creating this. As you add features I hope you’ll consider creating a pro version.

One feature request: I’d like to be able to unmemorize all the cards in a category in one go, or be able to uncheck them in a list like the All Cards screen. I’d pay for that alone.

I’m looking forward to the addition of the interval memorization with scores syncing back to the desktop.

I also think the ability to add a card to a deck on iFlash Touch would be very useful: i.e. for those studying languages or vocabulary, adding a new word from your reading (or whatever) would be great.

I’m glad everything worked out for you after all the hassles. Thanks for all the hard work! It shows.

I would love the ability to see the customized cards – I always make my fronts pink and my backs blue – so I can quickly see whether I am looking at a question or answer at a fast glance.

I would love a feature to be able to create cards ON my iPhone, or even edit a card on the iPhone.

Again – Thank you – AWESOME app!!!

  35. Thank you very much David!

using iflash for studying japanese for a long time, I was waiting this iphone version, and these days I was checking your blog daily. I know that it has been difficult, but thanks to your motivation, iflash touch is now available. Really great!

iflash touch reachs my expectation: simple interface, smooth, support perfectly kanji and other foreign characters, export from mac works well. It is almost perfect.

The main point to be added would be the score memorization, same as the mac version. And the ability to sync back this score to the mac. Simple memorization(known/unknown) is not efficient enough for learning.

Also, instead of studying all cards, or only some category, it would be usefull to be able to select some card, by the score (ex: select score less than 3, in order to study first the unknown cards, etc…)

But I am sure that you will improve that point for the next update!!

    Anyway, thank you again! Bravo!

    Comment by Joel — May 15, 2009 @ 10:39 pm
  36. Thanks for the great app! It is very solid running on my side and the sync prossess is so fast! As for the next version, many features have been already highlighted here. If adding/editing of cards is a more release 2.0 kind of activity, I would love to have the opportunity to flag a card. So, if I spot an typo on a card during learning I can flag the card and change later on my Mac.

A card wallpaper that looks like a real paper card would be nice… :-)

  38. It would be nice to be able to move cards to different catagories. Also, you should be able to edit text in cards just like in Mac version. Also, you should be able to put your cards on the database, and if you have a new iPod, not have to sync it. (Basically, sync from the database also.)

Also, please add ability to add new cards, which would make it not completely dependent on iFlash for mac.

  45. Most excellent to see – thanks for all your work on this. One question for those of us studying languages that use arabic script (and assuming that you can say anything given any developer NDA), any sense of whether the impending 3.0 release will allow iFlash to support actual cursive (i.e., joined up – as opposed to the single character support that now exists) arabic script? Got a ton of Farsi flashcards that are begging to be studied on the subway… Alternatively, maybe image support with an automated pdf out for those of us that use odd texts not supported by the iphone OS. After taking an appropriate and well deserved break of course! [Ah users, always with the need.]

  46. What do you do if you can’t get your ipod touch to pair with IFlash (i.e. it doesn’t show you the 4-digit passkey on the device).

I’ve tried turning on and off the device, re-installing the program from the app store, different decks.

  56. I’m already benefiting with my summer law courses. I would like one feature in particular:
The ability to set a default minimum font for the cards on the iphone. I am assuming that the font size of the cards is being transferred with the deck. The font size I chose for my decks looks good on the computer screen, but too small for my eyes on the iphone. I have to resize the font each time I study.

Otherwise, thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Comment by John — May 24, 2009 @ 9:23 pm
  57. Howdy,

Do you think it would be possible to add a rating system for the individual cards? This way, you don’t simply select that you “know” or “don’t know” a flash card; you are able to rate your knowledge of the card on a scale of 1-3 (and also “known”). Then you could have an algorithm that causes low rated cards to appear more often than highly rated cards.

Thanks so much for your genius. I’m doing so well in school now …

  59. Having the same issue as jana. I should say that I am connected both by wireless AND ethernet, however. Is wireless internet the only way available in the SDK to export card decks? I’d love to use this in conjunction with our iFlash installs here at our university, but turning on the wireless adapters of our lab iMacs is not much of an option, as it introduces all kinds of other issues.

  60. jana and itsalljustaride:

I’m still looking into the cause of these issues. I do know that some school networks block the Bonjour technology from working, which iFlash requires.

  61. Thanks Davey. I tried it at home and for the most part it works fine, with the exception of one card set that reliably crashes iFlash when it attempts to sync (Genki 1/2), and another whose characters don’t display properly (Tibetan, I wasn’t holding my breath on that one anyway really). All in all a great start. I can tell you’ve put in some man hours on this, good work :).

I suppose if we did decide to use this at the uni we could set up a wireless router that isn’t connected to the network and just use it with one computer as a sync station. Actually could probably use the airport in the machine as the wireless access point through Sharing.

  66. Any update on progress toward update with sound and images? weeks? months? any info will be much appreciated.

    Comment by Lee — June 4, 2009 @ 5:39 pm
  67. @Xan. If you’re getting to the 12th box within 1.5 months then you might want to try setting your intervals a bit larger. Check out the intervals mentioned here…

    http://www.flashcardexchange.com/docs/leitner

These are comparable to most leitner SRS systems and are based on scientific study on how long it takes an average person to forget a fact. I have been using this setup for 2-3 years with a 3000 card deck and and my most mature cards are still in box 10. I score on average 90% on my daily reviews and only have to review 20-30 cards per day. It’ll be another 5-6 years before my cards reach the end of the line and start looping on a 4 year cycle.

If you’re working with short interals then you’re probably giving yourself a lot of unnecessary work. You may even be preventing the fact from moving from your short term memory into your long term memory. Anyway, I don’t know what your specific needs are, but hopefully this is helpful to you.

    Comment by martin — June 5, 2009 @ 8:16 am
  68. After playing a lot with my new iPod touch, I finally started using iFlash touch. Very nice within it’s limited functionality! In particular I like the possibility of tapping to flip a card and to get to the next one. One minor thing: sometimes I click the green button and then (just when the animation is about to start) I tap the card to go to the next card. The result is that the next card is flipped, which can be bit confusing. Maybe you can deactivate the possibility to flip a card by tapping while the animation is running.

Anyway, the feature I’m missing most is to reset all cards to unknown (for example a new menu item “Reset Cards to Unknown” in the study menu in addition “Study Unknown Cards” and “Study All Cards” and “Cancel”). The problem with “Study Unkown Cards” is that when I start this but have to leave the program, the information which cards I have reviewed already is lost when I want to continue. While this information would be kept when all cards were reset to unkown.

    Apart from this: great work!

  69. Love IFlash and recommend it for my college students.

I have a major problem in regard to the iPhone/iPod app teaching language. My Greek or Hebrew fonts do not show on the app. I use the Accordance Bible program (a Mac dedicated program; http://www.accordancebible.com) which uses the Helena and Yehudit fonts. What happens is that the face of the card only show English letters used to enter the letters and accents and breathing marks (various accents and markings are an essential part of these languages—the problem may lie here). Without the Greek or Hebrew fonts the app is no help in learning that language. My students would love this capability.

    Thanks!

  72. Hi Davey,
After recommendation from a friend, I just got iFlash. I used to work with Vokker.net before, but I love iFlash already!
I actually use it to study Chinese, and I notice there are a couple of guys here that learn other languages with complex characters (Japanese…). The iPhone / iPod touch actually has one big advantage over conventional computers, and you could make a big advantage for your product out of it: Touch screen & character recognition. I think it would be of great value if you can enter the expected back side of a card by typing it using the iPhone keyboard, then have iFlash check if it’s correct. For english, this doesn’t make sense, but for Chinese it does, because this really forces you to know the shape / strokes of the character.
Other than that, score memory and back-syncing to the laptop would be highly appreciated. Thanks for the great work!
