iFlash Touch 1.0.2 Submitted; Fixes issues with iPhone OS 3.1
Edit: The update has been posted to the App Store!
I’ve just submitted iFlash Touch 1.0.2 to the App Store for approval. The release fixes the big crash that iPhone OS 3.1 caused when trying to export card decks from your Mac. Additionally, there are a few more fixes that should get rid of some other occasional crashes.
Keep an eye out for the update to be posted. Looking at past historic updates, it will probably take around a week for Apple to approve the update. I have emailed the app review team to see if they can speed up the approval process this one time.
Sorry for the trouble!

Kudos on your impressive responsiveness. Great software! I can’t wait to finally be able to use it on the phone.
Excellent – I just realized the problem tonight. Its great to know you are on top of it. The program has really helped in dental school. – very much appreciated
Just sent Troubleshooting email regarding same.
Please fix asap!
Iflash contains all my notes for my exams!
Thank you for your quick attention to this problem!
Why don’t the images, audio, and scores in my deck export to iFlash Touch?
In the interests of releasing iFlash Touch within this century, I decided to postpone adding image and audio support :-). They’ll be in a future version though, along with score and interval memorization support.
Does this statement mean, that even if I attach files to the flashcards and upload them to my iPod Touch, I will not be able to see them to study off of them? If this is the case any ETA on when that feature will be available? I just purchased your software and if I can get it to work properly I know my other class mates will love to download the app and use it as well. Please let me know.
Thanks
Thanks for being so fast about supporting this great app!
Thanks for the quick fix. I just noticed it when trying to export in prep for my final. Ack! At first I thought it was just my phone but glad that’s not the case.
I just purchased a new iPod Touch and spent hours trying to figure out how to make the export work! Now I know what the problem is. Thanks for the quick fix effort. Can’t wait to get studying.

Yes.

This is unknown. But the author is a busy college student and did post looking to twitter looking to hire someone to take over iFlash programing.
So… unless he’s found a replacement programmer I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Graf: that is untrue. I posted to see if anyone wanted to be a support person, not a developer :).
Oops!
(No ill intent was meant, that was just what I thought you meant when you said “support”)
So we -can- expect future updates to iFlash Touch?
(Like editing cards, choosing whether to study all cards or just “unknown ones”, flagging cards and the interval system that made iFlash so popular?)
Is there anything we can do/ anyone we can email, to get the approval process sped up?
I really never had any crashing problems with the app, but I did have big time problems with flat out bugs.
I’m really disappointed that almost none of the desktop features, exist on the IPhone version. I really loath having to use my desktop to study flash cards. I didn’t even want the desktop version to begin with. I didn’t realize that IPhone app would be so stripped compared to the desktop version. For instance, why in the world doesn’t IPhone app support scoring? Do you know how bad it sucks to study a deck of cards 2000 deep from end to end every time even when you know 90% of them. And further more, when you import decks, if they have all been marked “learned” there is nothing you can do to get the app to show you the decks haha. It just opens the deck and closes it then gets stuck in some bizarre state and you eventually just have to restart the app, which does you no good cause it’ll just do the same thing again.
At $15 this is one of the highest priced items in the App Store, and it is after all just an Flash Card app, so I’d expect it to be a pretty good one with the bugs worked out. As of right now, the iPhone app is unusable for me, so I’m going to cross my fingers and hope the issues that were around prior to the 3.1 crashing issues are fixed also. Otherwise, I’ll have to request a refund and give something like MentalCase or iFlpr a try.
The OS 3.1 fixer update is now up (at least in the French App Store it is). Seems to be working well.
Alex, I think you’re being a bit unreasonable with some of your points.
1. You should read all the info before downloading the app. He’s written quite clearly that it doesn’t support score or interval memorisation, images or audio. I’ve been happily using the iphone app and am glad that he didn’t wait for ever until all the features were implemented.
2. The app doesn’t cost $15. Its free. The desktop version costs $15. The desktop version has been around a lot longer than the iphone app. I think $15 is very reasonable for a desktop application. Obviously you need the desktop version to run the iphone version, but do you really expect him to drop the price of the desktop app after making the iphone app to give his users extra functionality for free?
I’m also looking forward to getting more functionality in iflash touch, but I think he’s delivered a very solid and usable app considering that up until today it was only at version 1.0.1. He said recently that it’ll just be 2 or 3 months away before we get some serious new features (such as score and interval memorisation).
Alex: something to keep in mind is that iFlash Touch is an accessory to the iFlash for Mac program. Like Mike mentioned, iFlash for Mac has been around a lot longer, and iFlash Touch was basically released to give existing iFlash for Mac users a way to study on their phones.
Feel free to email me and I’ll send you a refund. However, I do have to mention that this is exactly why I offer a 15 day free trial for the Mac version (and why the iPhone version is free!), since I don’t want people buying something that doesn’t fit their needs.

Seems to have solved the problem- so cool! Thanks Davey for your continued hard work. Even the bare bones version is still far and away the best flash card program out there.

Objectively this is not really true. iFlash Touch is a way for people study their simple decks on the iPhone/Touch. Since it doesn’t support interval/etc you can’t study those decks.
But as the developer who sells/makes money on iFlash purchases you naturally see it differently.
So is this a confirmation that iFT has stopped and you have no plans to add additional features? -If- you are considering adding additional features, what/when?
(People keep asking and you you keep either not responding or being vague. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for to ask the question.
Focusing your responses entirely on how the questioners assumptions are wrong without actually answering the question isn’t going to make people ask you any less. If there’s not going to be any new development for six months or a year (or forever) just come out and say it.)
Davey,
Thanks for the fix! It’s all working as promised.
Well for those of you who purchased the desktop version many moons ago as “a desktop version”, who very content with viewing flash cards on your desktop, and are pleasantly surprised when the desktop version one day becomes ported to the iPhone/iTouch, you probably cannot see my position from way up in your ivory towers.
For me, I was browsing the app store one day looking specifically for some sort of flash card study tool to help me with my upcoming Portuguese class. I had tried 1 or 2 already but didn’t want to put much effort into building decks with them cause I wasn’t quite happy with them. I saw iFlash mentioned in some blog on the internet and decided to give it a try because it had some good reviews (likely from individuals in ivory towers). I was a little surprised and dismayed by the little disclaimer saying it needed a desktop app companion in order to work. Seemed reasonable to assume that an app like this in the app store would be stand alone… but it is what it is. Coincidentally, I just so happened to have a mac. Since I’ve been a Windows/Linux user my whole life so I emphasize “coincidentally”.
But I figured “what the hay”, the App looks pretty good, the desktop has a demo, and if I have to deal with a desk top version to get a good hand held version, well then so be it, I’ll try anything once.
So I start using the app and it turns out it is fitting my needs. Its very handy on the go, and I like the look and feel of it. A week later class starts. So I begin adding each days vocabulary to my deck and it grows to about 70. At this point I’m still pretty happy with the app so I commit and purchase the desktop version just as it expired. Each successive week of class I add about 100 vocabulary words to my deck. Whoa, now plunging through this deck is becoming a little painful, 100’s of cards in which you know %85 percent of them, plus I’m discovering little annoying bugs here and there that wear on your nerves after hours of studying. Oh lookie, lets try one of these study/learning algorithms, it’ll help hide those 100’s of cards that I clearly have memorized already… nice. Oh wait…. doesn’t seem to be working on iPhone. But I don’t understand, I clearly see the settings right here on the desktop, and sure enough, it works on the desktop. Did I miss some fine print somewhere… Ahhhhha, I find out its not supported by reading the blog on this site and notice other people asking for this very feature. The deck has grown to 700+, too painful to study through, and there is a bug (which i have emailed Dave about), that actually prevents you from studying the deck on your device. I’m never at my mac, so now I have a $15 flash card app that I can’t use. Buyer’s remorse sets in.
Minus the actual software bugs and the missing study algorithms on the hand held device, I’m a happy camper and oddly enough don’t mind buying a desktop application as a means to use a hand held one. I’m sure Dave’s a smart guy and realizes this is going to be the scenario with some users, if not a “majority” of his new users since the app first appeared in the app store. I’m not surprised that Apple gave him a hard time approving the app since he is getting a mother load of advertising for free on the app store and basically bypassing Apple’s %30 cut. With the plugs Apple has pulled on other projects I’m more surprised that iFlash got the green light. So to those of you who want to say “Its a FREE app so quit complaining”, those of use who found this in the app store and were looking for an iPhone app are going to tell you guys to “shove it, it’s not free”. On that note, I actually wouldn’t mind it being a “for charge” app and loosing this desktop dependency. Not everyone has mac computer.
Bottom line though, if the bugs I’ve experienced weren’t there, and the study algorithms existed on the hand helds, that would be enough pros for me to outweigh the cons. Its not free, so we do have perfectly good reason to speak up when things are not working right.
With that being said, I did read in some post somewhere on this site, that my concerns were going to be addressed and there was some time frame of 2 to 3 months. Unfortunately my class will be just about over by then, but then there Portuguese 201 to take next semester. So I will wait with baited breath for the next update and hopefully I can camp happily after that. I do wish however that “future update” announcements were placed in a more prominent and permanent location on the website and not as some reply to some random comment in a blog.

Alex,
You should know what they say about people who assume…
There are tons of apps in the app store that require either desktop software to function, or a subscription service, or both.
The app is an add-on. It has no stand-alone functionality without the desktop, which should’ve been apparent when you first downloaded it. It clearly states in the app store description that iFlash Touch is the COMPANION app to the desktop version. Its in bold for goodness sakes! Even if that caveat was added after the fact, its not the developer’s fault if you downloaded the trial for FREE and went 2 WEEKS without figuring out that iFT doesn’t have algorithms and images.
Now, I wouldn’t mind having full functionality either, but your comment about not everyone having a mac is irrelevant. Not everyone has an iphone either, should he make a standalone palm and windows mobile version too? He’s a part-time Mac developer, and still in school. He just learned how to code specifically for the iphone at the request of desktop users. Its a side project, and he didn’t have to do it at all, let alone for free. Plus, its not like the app store description is misleading. Reading is fundamental Alex, he even offered you a refund.
Davy, great app. Please add a folder system in the next update. I’ve got 50+ decks of various unrelated subjects and its really cumbersome to sort through all of them to get to the one i want.
hey man,
love the app! but i when can see other features like font support. sometimes i have long questions that don’t fit on the ipod touch. but otherwise it’s a great app.
Alex: Should you ever want to buy a car and make a test drive at the car dealer, please bear in mind that gasoline is limited until next refuel at gasstation. Please don’t blame the dealer for not telling you this…
It’s so sad that the developer has to defend himself for a feature you are missing which has never been advertised by him.
Just installed iflash itouch on my ipod touch. When I click on the export the program just sits there and searches for a device. Both Mac and touch on same wireless. I am not that computer savy so could someone fill me in on how to export. Driving me crazy. No one else seems to have a problem like this as I can’t find any helps anywhere to answer this problem
Since installing the iTunes update today, my iFlash decks wouldn’t export from my Macbook to the iPod Touch (asking me to make sure devices are on same network etc.) Got round it by sending not to my specified device but to the generic iPod Touch symbol which asked me to punch in a 4 digit code and it worked. Another bug maybe??
Hey Davey… I love your work and all, but you gotta push something out. I have got four years of vocab in my desktop version. How am I supposed to effectively study that on an app that only offers “random order” as it’s best study option?
Right now I am exporting everything from iFlash to another iPhone app for studying. The app isn’t as polished as yours, but I gotta tell you it offers a lot more features than yours and it gets the job done.
Also, I have used iFlash for a long time now, so I know this iPhone app is a recent edition, but there are a lot of people who are new to iFlash, see there is a companion iPhone app (which was probably the deciding factor to buy) and then realize later that the app has almost none of the functionality of the desktop version… you don’t think thats a rather poor user experience? They set everything up on their mac then find only basic functionality exists on their iPhone, no wonder they feel cheated.
Hi Dave!
Thanks for fixing the problem with “study all”! :)
Here is another problem:
I just tried to sync my iPod touch with the cards
on my iBook. This worked fine several weeks ago in
a different wireless network, but it doesn’t work
in the wireless network of my new university:
My iBook and my iPod touch are both connected to
the internet via the same wireless network. When
trying to export cards, the iFlash application just
keeps looking for an iPod without finding it.
Or maybe there are too many iPods in the network?
Did anyone experience similar problems?
Is this a “feature” of the wireless network?
Is there a solution that doesn’t involve changes
to the wireless network?
Thanks!
Martin
Hello, I purchased iFlash for studying herbs among other subjects of TCM. I an having a hard time figuring out (or if it’s a glitch) how to export the pictures and audio from my my computer along with the text to my iphone. It is one of the main reasons I bought both of them. When I export the deck to my phone the first card (which shows the herb picture and audio on my computer) shows up blank on the phone. Any ideas?
