Loopware State of the Union

Loopware — Tags: , , — Davey @ January 9, 2011

I liked Panic’s State of the Union blog post, and thought I should do the same :).

It’s been way too long since I last posted here, and I apologize for that. I keep saying this over and over again, but I think it bears repeating: I’m (still) a full-time college student, and honestly have had no time to work on iFlash beyond responding to customer emails.

That being said, I’ve been busy the past few weeks and have started on some much-needed updates.

iFlash in the Mac App Store

iFlash 2.8.2 has been submitted to the Mac App Store! It’ll be the same price as it is now, and should be available from there soon. 2.8.2 is available now if you already use iFlash and has a few nice bug fixes, so go ahead and update!

The Mac App Store is an amazing way to get software, and I can’t wait to finally be rid of PayPal. Don’t worry if you have a non-App Store copy of iFlash though, as I’ll be providing updates to both (unlike some other developers).

iFlash Touch

I’m actively working on iFlash Touch 1.5 now, which will have full iOS 4 support, Retina icons, score and simple memorization support, as well as some other fun changes. iFlash Touch will remain completely free, but will continue to require iFlash for Mac.

I’ll be recruiting beta testers soon (within a few weeks), so keep an eye out on both this blog and my Twitter account if you’re interested. Here’s a screen shot to whet your appetite :).

Thanks everyone for your patience. I hope you enjoy the upcoming releases.

- Davey

  2. I can’t wait this update!
Davey, does iFlash Touch 1.5 support multitasking? I have ALWAYS had to start my study from the beginning whenever I get phone calls.
And I hope this version has a scroll bar so that I can scroll long text.
There is also a bug. When I touch twice fast on the bottom on iFlash Touch, I have to start from the first word or get to kicked out.

  3. Andrey: Not sure yet.

Paul: Yeah, it’ll have all that stuff :). I may not add a scroll bar to studying, however the text will autoresize to fit the card, which fixes the issue for 99% of people.

  4. It’s great to see you back and working on iFlash Davey! Despite the long period of inactivity it’s still my favorite notecard app.

I just want to chime in and join Andrey in asking for an iPad support in the next version of iFlash Touch! It really is a shame to have such a beautiful interface all stretched out and pixelated.

Support for mathematical formulas would also be nice…but I’ll refrain from turning this post into a laundry list of feature requests. :P

  5. Hi Davey,

Love your app and was very pleased to see it works with the iPod touch. I’d like to vote for a few additions in the 1.5 version:

    1. Photo support would be great. I’ve lots of histology flash cards and I’m disappointed I can’t use them from the touch.

    2. iPad support please! I’ll be using the iPad for patient encounters and having the option to use iFlash to study in my down time would be very nice.

Thanks for all your work – you’re making the academic world an easier place to thrive in.

  6. Good news! I recently tought to try another software because of the inactivity. I don’t like to hack thousands of cards into a futureless project. So I am very happy to hear that the product is still supported and not dropped. I highly appreciate your work and effort you are doing while studying. Many thanks for this fine tool!

  7. @ Erik
    Me, too.
I also tried almost every flashcard apps on App Store, but there was no replacement for iFlash.

  8. I’m really happy you’re back.

Please, do implement pictures and sound on the mobile version.

iFlash is the best, but the lack of development was making me consider other options. I would like to stick to iFlash. I really love it.

    Happy new year.

    Best,

    Antonio

  9. Its incredible that you’re back! Your product is amazing, and you could make a fortune off of it with the appropriate updates, etc. The updates look great, and I can’t wait. The mac app store is a must have. iFlash is a must have product.

One thing you may want to consider is cleaning up your google group, as last time I checked, there was a lot of spam.

Can’t wait for the updates! iPad support would be appreciated :D

  10. Please add iPad support!

  11. Yeah, I’m pretty un-impressed with the level of spam on there. You’d think that Google, who does excellent spam prevention with Gmail, would be able to get it right. I’m sure they’re working on it :).

  12. Hi Davey,

Glad to see you didn’t abandon us! :-)

Can’t wait for iOS4 support. Let me know if you need beta testers. I use iFlash daily and work in software dev/QA.

  13. One thing I really miss about iFlash Touch right now is resetting all cards of a deck/category to “unknown”.

Will full screen mode be improved in the Mac version and get a proper UI that actually utilizes the entire screen?

  14. One thing that I would like to suggest is for a UI overhaul. Not the overall look, just new icons (for the toolbars, etc.). This is alot of work, so maybe you could find a designer friend to help you… This is probably low on your priorities, but iFlash is starting to look a little dated (seeing that many programs have moved to minimalist grey look).

    Thanks!

Also a fullscreen UI for Lion and a iPad app would be awesome, even better then a UI overhaul.

  15. Awesome! Amazing that you’re a student and you’ve been able to pump as much out as you have, (i.e. I wish I had that kinda time to seriously develop).

Greatly looking forward to the updates!
